Febutaz 40 mg tablet belongs to a class of medicines known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors and contains febuxostat as its active ingredient. It is mainly prescribed for the treatment of gout, a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid accumulation in the body. This medicine is also used to prevent and manage elevated uric acid levels that may occur when chemotherapy is initiated for certain blood cancers. By lowering uric acid levels, Febutaz helps reduce the risk of tumour lysis syndrome (TLS). TLS is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can occur in patients with haematological cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma undergoing chemotherapy. It develops when cancer cells break down rapidly, releasing substances such as uric acid, potassium, and phosphate into the bloodstream.

During treatment, your doctor may regularly monitor blood parameters, including white blood cell count, platelet levels, blood sugar, electrolytes, and kidney function, to prevent complications. This medicine may also increase the risk of heart-related problems.

Before starting this treatment, inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, heart failure, high cholesterol levels, or high blood pressure. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice signs of allergic reactions, such as skin rashes or itching.

This tablet contains lactose as an inactive ingredient. Individuals with lactose intolerance may experience symptoms like bloating or abdominal discomfort. Inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance before beginning this medication.
